The “Fitness Instructor Training Program” is designed to teach students the fundamentals of group fitness instruction. Additionally, the program will prepare students for a national fitness certification examination.
What is involved in the program?
Students will attend a weekly class session consisting of classroom presentations as well as hands-on practical exercises. Topics such as exercise physiology, anatomy, kinesiology, biomechanics, nutrition, group exercise program design, motivation, health screening, exercise for special populations, injury prevention, emergency protocols, legal and professional responsibilities, music, cueing, alignment, choreography, teaching skills and music selection will be covered. A group fitness instructor manual, written by the American Council on Exercise (www.acefitness.org), will be utilized in the course. Students will also be encouraged to attend the fitness classes during the semester offered at The Freeman Center Trieshmann Health and Fitness Pavilion to gain first hand experiences in a fitness class environment and also to transition into "shadowing" a fitness instructor.
The course prepares students for national fitness instructor certifications (ACE, AFAA). Upon successful completion of the national certification exams and Adult CPR/AED/First Aid, students will be eligible to apply for fitness instructor positions at The Freeman Center.
